Summary Of Glimpses Of  India

Chapter-7 of class 10 of book First Flight, consist-prose which is Glimpses of India. There are three parts in the chapter named as follows-:
  • A Baker from Goa
  • Coorg
  • Tea from Assam
So, lets get detailed summary of these parts, one by one.

 I. A Baker From Goa

The Old Portugeesse Days In Goa

In the old Portugeese days in Goa,a Baker used to play very important role. Leaves of bread were Part and Parcel of the Portuguese Bakeries. Even after the Portuguese left Goa. The Traditional Bakers still exist in Goa and So there mixers, moulders and furnances. The sound of Bakers Bamboo can still be heard in some places of Goa. The sons of the traditional Bakers still carry on there buissness and are known as 'paders' even today.

Example 1. What are the elders in Goa nostalgic about?
Ans. The elders in Goa are nostalgic about the good old Portugeesse baked there famous leaves of Bread.


Baker's Morning Arrival in Street

In the morning, baker used to come with a huge basket of bread on his head. The jingling of sound of his bamboo stick aroused the children. He would call out the lady of the house and wish her 'Good Morning'. The children will flock around him to get the sweet bread bangle but were pushed aside with a mild rebuke to deliver the bread to the maid of the house. The children would not even brush their teeth and et the bread bangles with tea in the morning.

The Importance of Bread in Ceremonies

Marriages and other important ceremonies had no meaning without having sweet bread known as bol, in it. For a daughter's engagement, the lady of the house was supposed to make sandwiches and for Christmas and other festivals, cakes and bolinhas were mandatory.

The  Bress of Bakers and Their Prosperity

In olden days, the bread-sellers wore a one-piece long frock nabed 'Kabai' that reached there knees of the bakers. After words, they started wearing shirts with pants that were longer than half pants and shorter than full pants. In today's time also if anyone is seen wearing half pants, then he is thought to be dressed like a pader. They used to collect the bills at the end of the month. They used to record their monthly bills on the walls with a pencil. Baking was then a quite profitable profession. They were round and plump men. Any man, who looked like that, was considered to be a prosperous baker.

Example 2Who invites the comment - "he is dressed like a pader"? Why?
Ans. Anyone who wears a half pant that reaches just below the knee invites the comment "he is dressed like a pader". It is because in olden days, the bakers or paders used to wear such half pants.

Example 3. What does a 'jackfruit-like appearance' mean?
Ans. 'Jackfruit-like appearance' means a round and plump physique of a person, especially the stomach making the person look like a pear. Such a physique ensured that the person is prosperous and wealthy.
